Progeny

Children take on characteristics of their parents.

“She has her mother’s eyes.”
“He’s the spitting image of his dad.”

This body of work, Progeny Series, explores two generations of artwork: parent and progeny. The “parent” piece (first generation) is created using fairly traditional methods—graphite and acrylic paint on paper. The second generation, or “progeny,” is created using more recent tools and media—the computer, digital cameras and large format printers.

Each parent piece produces 8–10 progeny.

I am interested in the unique qualities of different tools and media. With this series, I continue to explore how modern technologies affect the process and outcome of the work I am producing and how that compares to more traditional methodologies (in this case painting on paper). I am hoping not only to better understand the strengths and weaknesses of each modality, but also to open an “intergenerational” dialogue between different ways of making art.
