As a painter and a digital artist, I have often felt myself at odds: I love the textural nature of paint and other media on paper and canvas. On the other hand, for the past 18 years I have been fascinated by the process of creating images electronically. Compared with painting or drawing with traditional media, the computer offers a unique range of possibilities, including the ability to size, pattern, twist, overlay, and alter colors as well as the opportunity to return to earlier stages of a piece and branch out in entirely new directions.
Over the past several years, I began scanning sections of my paintings and drawings into my computer. I wanted to continue working with the computer but liked the idea of introducing traditional brush strokes and marks into my electronic images. Although pleased with the outcome, I often wished I could change my electronic images back into acrylic paintings to create a final piece that was more textural. Thus, the idea for this series of triptychs grew out of my desire to both highlight the unique qualities of each medium as well as explore the ultimate integration of the two.
